1871 – BACON COVE – A small fishing settlement at the head of Conception Bay, district of Harbour Main. The settlement is prettily situated on a neck of land which separates Collier Bayfrom Salmon Cove. Distant from St. John’s by road 42 miles. Mail weekly. Population 104.

1871 – CAT’S COVE – A large fishing settlement at the head of Conception Bay, district of Harbor Main. Its name is now Conception. The scenery around here is very fine, bold and beautiful. Farming is engaged in by the people to a considerable extent. Distant from St. John’s by road, 39 miles. Mail weekly. Population 649.

1871 – HOLYROOD -A large fishing settlement on south side of Conception Bay, district of Harbor Main. The first caplin in Conception Bay were found here. Signs of copper exist in the rocks close by, and an attempt has been made at mining. There is a remarkable hill just outside of the settlement called the “Holyrood Butter Pots.” It is a post town. Distant from St. John’s 28 miles by road.
