Walsh

Well, actually

My Theoretical Walsh Tree

I’ve been attempting to link the various Holyrood Walsh families into family groups.
James Walsh and Mary Besso/Beeso/Beseau/Besaw are my great great grandparents, but it’s never been obvious who James Walsh’s siblings or his parents may be.

I believe I have enough info now to at least make a start on possible siblings.

Background

I’ve connected these people mostly through family stories. Hard facts have been slow in coming but where there is life, -there’s hope. Right? If you can shed light in any way, I really would be most grateful.

I’ve included Grace Walsh and Mary Walsh for the simple reason that I think that they are sisters of Susan Walsh who married Thomas Butler. In Come Ashore to Holyrood, in the Mullowney section, it states that two Walsh sisters, Grace and Mary -married two Mullowney brothers, Philip and John.

In the section on the Walsh family, Rose O’Kelly, a granddaughter of Grace Mullowney, said that Grace’s family included Mary (John Mullowney), Susan (Thomas Butler), John Walsh (north side), 1Michael Walsh (Salmonier Line), and 2 Thomas (Kate Hicks) Walsh, Father Leo Walsh’s parents.

The article went on to say that the above people were related to Cripple Jack WALSH, [a son of James Walsh & Mary Beseau ] Mickey Peak, William at the Halfway House and William ( Mary Theresa ORourke) WALSH. [a son of Thomas Walsh & Margaret or Mary Taplin ]

1Michael Walsh (Salmonier Line). Aside from my great grandfather, (Michael, son of James Walsh and Mary Beseau), there were two other Michael Walshes that Rose O’Kelly might have been referring to. See Walsh in Come Ashore

2Thomas Walsh who married Kate Hicks was a son of Richard Walsh and Margaret (or Mary) Taplin. This Thomas had a brother, Alexander, who became a priest; upon taking his vows he took the religious name of Leo. Thomas and Kate had a son Leo -who also became a priest and was also known as Father Leo.

I’m not sure of John Walsh of the North Side -I don’t know enough about that branch yet. And I believe there was a Michael too, I just don’t know which one…

3. Thomas WALSH married Mary Ann or Mary Jane TAPLIN Jan 31 1864, Wit: Wm TAPLIN & Margaret TAPLIN — Entered twice. 2nd entry dated Jan 31 1867.

A story my mother told me helped me connect Thomas Walsh to my branch of the Walshes. One of his sons, Alexander or ‘Ellick’ Walsh, was a monk and a priest who had visited my grandparents in the 1950s. My grandparents called him Father Alex, but the name he took during his ordination was “Leo”, and they had told mom that he was related to my grandfather.

I first heard about this ‘Father Alex’ quite by accident. Father Dunn ( parish priest of Holy Cross parish in Holyrood until about 2001? ) spent time at a retreat at Westminister Abbey in Mission, BC some years ago. When it was discovered that he was from Holyrood, he was asked about a Father Leo Walsh, who had come from there, and who had been one of the founding fathers of the Abbey.

Father Dunn was pleasantly surprised at this news but he knew nothing about the man. When he returned to Holyrood he wrote a short item for the Church Bulletin – my mother read the item and told me about him. Up until then she had completely forgotten about Father Alex, or Father Leo Walsh.

Children:
( baps supplied by Mike Power except for Ellick which I found in the records at Holy Cross in 1999).
Ellick was their last child and the only one to be baptized in Holyrood.

In March of 2008, Joe Byrne informed me that he had obtained information from the historian at Mount Angel Abbey in Mission, BC that x. Father Leo [Ellick – Alexander] Walsh had had a nephew by the name of Bertrand McLaughlin – who had also been a Benedictine monk at the Abbey. This surprising news had us wondering which of Father Leo Alexander’s sisters was Father Bertrand’s mother; today I believe I found that information.
Thomas McLaughlin (25) of St John’s, Nfld and Elizabeth Walsh (23) of Conception Bay, Nfld married at Halifax, Nova Scotia on Nov 16 1895. His parents were listed as James and Margaret. Her’s as Thomas and Mary.

William McLaughlin must also have changed his name when he became a priest; his record of death lists him as Bertrand Leo McLaughlin, died at Marion, Oregon, USA on Feb 15 1990.

He was listed in both the US 1930 and 1940 census as living at East Mount Angel, Marion, Oregon. The Benedictine monks from this Abbey founded Westminster Abbey in Mission, BC in 1939. In the 1940 census he listed Kakawis, British Columbia, Canada as his place of residence in 1935.

8. ?? John Walsh, north side, father of Alphonsus.

I have a property map for the north side of Holyrood that begins at the Cold Storage area. Part of the Walsh Estate is on it, and the first property after that belonged to John of Richard Walsh. There is also a property on the Salmonier Line bordering on Kennedy’s Lane with the same name notation.

There is a cemetery listing at Kennedy’s Lane as follows:

Erected by John Walsh in memory of his father Richard WALSH who departed this life Dec 26 1869, 65 yrs. [b. 1804]
Also his wife Margaret who departed this life Jan 31 1889, 80 yrs.

In loving memory of John WALSH died May 31 1929, 79 yrs. [ b.1850]
Also his wife Margaret Walsh who died Jan 25 1885, 28 yrs.
their daughters Anastasia Apr 1883, 8 yrs
Mary Apr 1883, 6 yrs

John Walsh’s first wife was Margaret Lewis and if he was also the father of Alphonsus then he remarried.

WALSH John & Ann Crawley married at Holyrood Jul 18 1884
Witnesses: Elias Lewis and Margaret Walsh

Oct 26 1885 Alphonsus of John WALSH & Anne Crawley
Sps: Wm Carroll & Catherine Morrisey (Holy Cross ew)

But this is an impossible relationship because Margaret Lewis would still have been alive when he married Anne Crawley. Either the cemetery listing is not for this John Walsh or the date on the headstone or the date in the parish register is wrong. The 1921 census listing for Holyrood Central on the Grand Banks web site has a John Walsh living next to Patrick (Railway Pioneer) born 1851 June 70 (yrs).

Evening Telegram May 28, 1903 (Thursday)
“Heroic Conduct. Of an Eleven-Year-Old Girl – Deserving Appeal to the
Public for Aid. (Editor Evening Telegram)
Dear Sir, – It is seldom a case that is more deserving appeals to the public for aid and sympathy than that of Mr. James Walsh, Five Mile Post, Salmonier Line, who had his house and contents destroyed by fire on the 20th inst., during his absence. Not one article of value was saved from the conflagration, and now the poor man, seven children and wife, who is an invalid suffering from an incurable disease, and who was sent from the general hospital about a month ago to die, are dependent on the kindness of a neighbor to shelter them. The wife was in her bed at the time, unable to move, and watching the burning building around her, and watching also the flames greedy to devour their victim. When hope for safety had almost vanished from her, and she had resigned herself to her fate, her plucky little eleven-year-old daughter rushed into the burning building and, with strength superhuman, bore the helpless mother through the flames to a place of safety. Well can we imagine her father’s joy, mingled with sorrow, on his return – joy for the beholding of his wife, safe to die a natural death, and sorrow for the loss of his belongings. Those who may be disposed to help the fallen in distress, could not donate to a better advantage than by helping this distressed family, and any donations in the form of food and clothing for them will be thankfully received by Mr. Michael Walsh, Peak Hotel. – Com.

In 2002, at the Provincial Archives in St. John’s, I found three baptisms for this couple: Arthur 1893, Joseph 1895, Mary Theresa 1897. They were all baptized at The Parish of the Assumption Church, St Mary’s, St Mary’s Bay, and Elizabeth and Thomas Stamp were recorded as living in St. Vincent’s.

I don’t know when Thomas Stamp died, or when Elizabeth Lewis Stamp married James Walsh.

My grandmother told me twenty years ago that my grandfather’s uncle, James Walsh, and his “brother” Ellick, had both died at sea. A number of older relatives had confirmed that James had died when the Southern Cross disappeared in a storm -but no one remembered anything about an Ellick or Alex. I’ve never been able to find a birth record for him either and it wasn’t until Tom Hynes sent me the following news item that my grandmother was proved – mostly right. Thanks Tom.

my great great grandparents are also James Walsh & Mary Beseau. My great grandmother is Margaret Walsh, who married Michael Cahill. Their daughter Clara married Joseph Meehan, my grandparents. My mother married James J Walsh. As far as I know no relation to my great great grandfather. Although his family is from somewhere in Newfoundland!

Until just a day or two ago I didn’t know There where Walshes on both sides of my family.

My mother’s side of the family is mainly from the St. Mary’s, Point La Haye area.

This has been very interesting. My grandparents “Walsh” were from Holyrood. I believe my grandfather, Leo Walsh, was from Brigus Junction area. He married Gertrude “Power” from Chapel Arm (I’d have to confirm that). They both moved from Freshwater to Holyrood. My grandfather would have been born in 1901 and my grandmother in 1908. They lived in the house not far from Holy Cross Church that sits next to the old graveyard. My mother found an old picture on the NF Gran Banks site that she’d like to confirm is my grandfather.

  5. Brian Comerford says:

My ancestors were a Thomas Comerford (Commerford in the records) and he was married to an Ellen Walsh they lived in the south side holyrood. The death record I found for Thomas said he was born in holyrood between 1808 and 1815. I found his wife’s name looking through baptism records in the St. Peter and Paul records I found that they had four children baptized between 1859 and 1866. Around 1870 they moved to mall bay I don’t know if Ellen died before they moved or after but I haven’t found any mention of her after 1866. I had noticed some other comerfords in the records for holyrood at that time. I have no way to link them together as of yet maybe somebody checking this site will know something though. I did find a few Ellen Walshs and a few comerfords in the records that you have posted maybe they could be more links

I’d like to believe they are all related somehow but I have no records to link them together all I know is I have found about 5 commerfords in Holyrood all having kids at about the same time between 1857 and 1866 I would think that that would be siblings or at least cousins but the records I think I need were destroyed in a fire

Wondering if you have any information concerning William Joseph Walsh, 1880-1948 of Argentia and Placentia, or his wife Annie M. Kemp born 1885, or any of their 7 children, of whom Brian Walsh (1919-1995) was one…

I am working on geneology for a dear friend. William and Annie were her great grandparents.

    I remain gratefully yours…
